Steel maintenance bridge
Commissioned by Ballast Nedam, Novicon has built a steel maintenance bridge (emergency bridge) around the existing pipe bridge over the A76. A project dated a few years back, but a challenging project which we are still proud of
What have we done?
This steel maintenance bridge was closed off with tents so that the maintenance work on the existing pipe bridge could be carried out and the traffic on the A76 could continue. The installation of the steel maintenance bridge took place in sections and was carried out in night sessions from 7.00 PM to 9.00 AM. Traffic on the A76 was diverted during this time.
The steel structure, weighing over 70 tonnes, was placed over the "northern" part of the existing pipe bridge. Large-scale equipment was used to carry out this work. With six trucks loaded with steel, two 140-ton telescopic cranes, one telescopic handler and three telescopic platforms, we drove from Twente to the A76 at Geleen, where the work was carried out by two assembly teams under the supervision of a lifting supervisor and a project supervisor.
In 9 weeks time, maintenance work was carried out on the existing pipe bridge, after which the steel emergency bridge was dismantled overnight. In the same night we, Novicon, mounted 82 metres of new gangways to the existing pipe bridge. A weekend later, the steel emergency bridge was assembled at night on the south side, after which the maintenance work on the existing pipe bridge took place. After the maintenance work, we dismantled and removed the emergency steel bridge at night.
